In my IRC days I've used https://github.com/irssi/scripts.irssi.org/blob/master/scripts/trackbar.pl to display a horizontal line in my messages list between the last read and first new message.
This feature/improvement would make the messages list a lot quicker to review because of the distinction between old and new messages.

Here is an example irssi screenshot I found online that shows what I mean:
