:join command takes a long time, sometimes returns cryptic error #397

I'm running iamb on Debian 12 with a fairly standard config. When I run the :join command, iamb invariably takes around 10 seconds or more to process it, and sometimes there's an error message: invalid room identifier: <weird hash>.

If I restart iamb, I can see that it has successfully joined the room. Still, this issue is annoying while joining because the entire interface becomes frozen and often needs to be restarted.
